San Francisco Math Teachers’ Circle
February 12 @ 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
The facilitator will be Sage Moore, McClymonds H.S. Here is a description.
The Dragon Curve
Beginning with strips of paper, we will construct Dragon Curves and search out patterns within this fractal. This fractal is easy to make and seems to cultivate many methods for representing and describing patterns. Better yet, there are multiple distinct patterns within the same phenomenon — we may all come up with different but equally valid ways of describing what we see. Time permitting, we will join our individual work together and make one huge Dragon Curve (Guiness Book of World Records anyone?).
A few weeks ago, we surveyed participants of our first two sessions to see how comfortable they would be attending an indoors event, given the spread of Omicron. As you would imagine, the results were mixed, with about equal numbers of people comfortable, uncomfortable, and undecided. So we plan to go ahead with an in-person meeting, with the understanding that our attendance may be lower. Don’t feel pressure to attend if you are worried! We certainly hope that conditions in March (when session 4 is scheduled) will be improved.
Proof School, like most schools, has a strict health protocol, and we will ask for proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours. We will also take your temperature and require good masks indoors. There will be coffee, tea, and bagels, but we ask that you only take off masks while eating and drinking, not talking. If you came previously with proof of vaccination, we recorded this so we can expedite your entry.
We plan to provide lunch, but to facilitate socializing, we will try to find a way to eat outside, either at the Kapwa gardens next door or Yerba Buena Gardens a few blocks away, weather permitting (YBG worked OK in October and December). If the weather is nasty we may just skip lunch, just to be cautious. We look forward to a time soon when we can treat you to a nice lunch indoors!
Proof School is located on Mission Street between 5th and 6th. There’s cheap metered street parking across the street (you’ll need to refresh the meter after 2 hours) and more expensive parking at the Fifth and Mission garage at…guess! And BART and buses are nearby.
All teachers at all levels are welcome. Feel free to share this invitation with others. Our events are free (including lunch).
Please RSVP with this form by Wednesday 9 Feb 2022.
