Problem

What is the minimal number of cuts it takes to create a cube out of an apple (or orange, or melon)? How about a trapezoidal or rhombic prism? What happens to the number of cuts as you go through polygon prisms, making triangular, quadrilateral, pentagonal, hexagonal etc. prisms? How about pyramids?

Is it possible to cut an apple into two parts, so that the skin will be separated into three parts?

Pedagogical notes:

* Children may have fun poke holes in the definition of a "cut" - budget some time for this.
* Likewise, the definitions of "prism" and "pyramid" need to be created together.
* Wait for children to imagine the cuts before each experiment. Encourage them to gesture as if cutting, to feel the shapes better.
* Children usually start yelling out hypotheses about answers, as you are preparing to cut apples. After they do for a while, go through every number they offered, and ask everybody who thinks this will be the answer to wave. Otherwise kids can keep repeating their answers all day (they want to make sure they are heard).
