The mission of the Northern Colorado Math Teachers’ Circle is to create a math circle for middle school teachers in Northern Colorado to work on interesting mathematics problems in a setting that enriches middle school teachers’ mathematics content knowledge as well as to develop their mathematical confidence in a safe environment. By working on interesting mathematical problems together, we expect that these teachers will deepen their understanding of mathematics, and approach mathematical problems more confidently. In addition, we hope that by modeling student-centered and inquiry based ways of teaching mathematics, these middle school teachers will become more comfortable using these teaching strategies in their own classrooms. Finally, we expect to have fun doing mathematics together and to forge new professional relationships among middle school teachers and university mathematics professors. The Northern Colorado Math Teachers’ Circle will provide a year-long high-quality professional development to middle school math teachers in Northern Colorado that starts with a week long summer workshop in June 25-29, 2012. During the five-day residential mathematics immersion workshop, the 25 middle school math teacher participants from Greeley and surrounding communities will work on problem-solving activities and have opportunities to connect the problems to their own classroom curriculum. Each day will consist of approximately 7.5 hours of highly interactive mathematical problem-solving sessions led by the leadership team. Teachers will have opportunities to discuss various problem-solving methods and ways to help their students become better problem-solvers. Furthermore, teachers will discuss the possible alignments of problems and problem solving skills with the new Common Core State Standards. In order to instill a community of problem-solvers, the participants will engage in a second component of the program. They will meet for a 3-hour intensive problem-solving session on a monthly basis during the 2012-2013 academic year. These monthly meetings will be held at the University of Northern Colorado.
